Creating a Postive Work Environment

Ever get up and not want to go to work? What makes you feel that way??? As an owner of a pet salon it makes good sense to keep my co-workers happy. Happy employees are more productive and provide a better customer experience. Nothing is worse than someone in a bad mood spreading negative energy throughout the workplace. And when you work with animals that negative energy will spread to them as well.

As an owner or manager it is important to recognize those who perform well. A good groom, handling a difficult customer, going the extra mile. People love recognition! Possibly reward those who go above and beyond with a nice lunch, or a card, or flowers. Even a simple "Thank You" will suffice.

It is also important to lead by example. If you are late every day how can you expect those who work with you to care about being prompt? Perform and act like you expect them to act. And never ask them to do anything you would not do yourself.

Always be approachable, so those who need to, can come to you with their concerns and know that you will listen and try to resolve any issues or conflicts quickly and professionally. And it is wise to not discuss anyones performance with other employees. And choosing favorites is a big No No!

Treating those who work with you with respect and appreciation will go far in growing your business. Those employees will work as a team better and care about your business because they feel a part of it.

Set your expectations and be consistent. Recognize those who perform well. Sometimes even creating friendly competitions within can be a fun way of working as a team and making being productive fun. And best of all...... your customers will see a happy staff who appear to love what they do. The positive energy will be contagious and you will create an environment where pet owners will be happy to leave their pets.
